Toshiba commissioned a study on flexible working last year to Sweeney Research, and found that while the majority of employees want to be able to work flexibly (ie, not in the office) there is one thing holding it back - lack of trust. A reason for this one could argue is that the technology for flexible working is already available, it just gets better and better, yet for some reason workers haven't been able to unchain themselves from the office. At its recent MobileXchange conference the keynotes were centred on highlighting workplace attitudes to flexible working, rather than spruiking the technology itself. The lack of support for flexible working is an issue close to Toshiba's heart, and being a notebook vendor it isn't hard to figure out why. With thanks to notebook and processor manufacturers, we have all been sold the dream of computing on the go but how many people you know are allowed to take advantage of the technology and work away from the office? I am going to guess not very many. Commentary The dream of flexible working is destined to stay just that, unless management changes its approach to measuring employee performance.
